The artist Benito Esquenazi has recently published a selection of drawings from his long-duration public art performance titled “The Lincoln Road 500”; in a coloring book format.

Where the artist completed 500 drawings in one continuous sitting spanning 32 hours.

The performance started Saturday night at 9:00pm of October 17, 2021; and completed on Monday morning at 5:00am of October 18, 2021.

Performed at the Meridian Oval located on the “Lincoln Road Mall” in South Beach. (Miami Beach, Florida).

Esquenazi states, “the selection of works presented in this coloring book explores various ideas that exist in my art, as well as unveils new archetypal themes revealed through this performance”.

Saltambiques

Every once in a while a painting emerges of acrobats (saltambiques, French).

For me, they appear in groups of three images.

I see the Saltambiquea as a “trickster” archetype.

They are extremely mischievous in a good hearted way. Though not destructive. Cajoling us to embrace the full moment.

We catch them in action.

Such a poignant exhibition at this point in history. With all the pain being inflicted on the world in this chaotic post October 7th moment.

I created this video from one of her sculptures.

The magic and power of art is of a creation inspired from a specific point of view, can tell everyone’s story from their perspective independently. Even if they exist on diametrically opposite sides.

Let’s all be brave enough to say release the hostages and stop aggressions when all nations are safe to live in peace.

Sunday 4/14/24 - Jerusalem 2:00 am

I had the honor and privilege to be in Israel for the failed assault by Iran of Israel.

Where they shot over 350 missiles. 100 of which were ballistic.

I was working in my Jerusalem traveling studio, while following the goings on moment by moment that night.

Some of my children and grandchildren were staying with me.

Early in the evening we prepared the bomb shelter and an escape plan.

I began a painting that night before 2am.

With all the energy in the air , all of us were up at 1:30am.

I could hear explosions in the distant sky booming like a huge firework.

I stepped out onto the balcony in central Jerusalem around 2:00am and saw some lit objects tracing fire across the night sky. More explosions. #irondome missiles shooting up, the air-raid siren goes off and we all go to our shelter location.

When I come to Jerusalem I go for morning coffee to a local cafe. Where I order a cappuccino and croissant. Where I sit any to draw for while.

Am sharing some of the drawings from these sessions post experience. These drawings were done in my traveling sketchbook.

I woke up this morning and I asked “Meta AI” to describe my artistic style.

I was pleasantly surprised in the way it organized themes in my work. Sharing concepts that are essential to my practice. Constructing ideas with words I have not used to portray what I am expressing visually.

For example the use of #mysticism and #sacredgeometry as key concepts in my practice.

When I talk about my work, I focus on the formal body that comprises my work, not the soulfulness of my practice.

We are in the infancy in using AI as a tool to better understand our world. I expect that my starry-eyed view and amazement of the mirror AI presents to us in this time will soon seem passé.

But for the moment, it is breeze that drifts in to share a new perspective with a pair of fresh eyes to see.

When we moved to Miami Beach in 2020 to spend a significant amount of our time, I cranked up my studio.

One of the themes that I have been attempting to pull through for as long as I can remember is the integration of my drawing and painting.

Parallel to my painting I am always drawing.

Being able to focus on an aspect of my work at the time is excruciatingly difficult for me since my approach in many cases is to incorporate as many thoughtful ideas as possible and then let the process of painting focus and isolate the image that is being revealed to me. As I drive towards discovery, I have a sense when this approach works. This occurs when my work is gazed upon, the viewer interprets an image or meaning beyond my capability to intentionally create it.

When I work this way, design becomes subservient to approach and the intuitive nature of image resolution, texture, color or graphical impact.

Whereby I acknowledge that most of my works are glorious failures as they deviate from original intent.

Even when I happen to hit on a painting that is aligned tightly to an original idea, I can’t but help myself through the painting process to exceed the minimum requirement. As in this painting, the way it is painted alludes to a much more humanistic interpretation of the image than the expansive initial idea that drove its creation.

Meaning it finds a balance between the worlds of intent and the excavation of my psyche through an exploration of limits.

The title of this work is:

I have not posted to IG in a while.

I was stuck on what my next post would be.

On January 3rd I found out one of my paintings was destroyed by a person I know. He took a furious knife to the art work in an act of violence which made me feel violated and a victim of a crime.

A third party with knowledge of the situation intervened.

I found out about this when I was working in my studio early that day. All day long I debated whether I should contact this person. I did, sending an email to him that evening.

This painting of two people embracing each other.

It is drawn with one line that defines each of the people.

One can say that the negative space created by one person also defines the second person.

You could say there is a relationship here. An efficient and beautiful one between two people in physical synchronicity.

You could also say that it is one person embracing the infinite, and that the infinite is spirit of another person.

One could say that there is a person with an internal struggle. They are embracing or wrestling himself.

I am deeply hurt by your destruction of my artwork. This artwork.

The words above are an excerpt from the email I sent them.

I know a painting is an inanimate object and of course worse things could of happened.

But still…art is a spark which has the possibility to light the flame within someone.

The spark from this painting is now lost.

Looking at the work knowing I will never physically see it again makes me less critical of the work.

A trait I have with any art I produce.

This occurrence reminds me to be less critical of the paintings, and especially people in my life. Lest I loose the opportunity to appreciate them in the present.

Maybe this is the residue of the spark this painting left behind.

Visiting “Il Maestro “ @slarosa1941 with @rdimatteo_pte . Sal La Rosa was one of the most important influences and art teachers in college at the moment I decided to commit to art. Visiting with one of my oldest friends from @prattinstitute Robert Di Matteo. Robert and I sat next to each other the first class on the first day of school in August 1981. It was Dr. Berman’s “Color Theory” class at Pratt, over 42 years ago.

Visiting “Il Maestro “ @slarosa1941 with @rdimatteo_pte . Sal La Rosa was one of the most important influences and art teachers in college at the moment I decided to commit to art. Visiting with one of my oldest friends from @prattinstitute Robert Di Matteo. Robert and I sat next to each other the first class on the first day of school in August 1981. It was Dr. Berman’s “Color Theory” class at Pratt, over 42 years ago.

Every detail matters. 🌟

In 2021, we unveiled Dance of the Drawings during ArtBasel (@artbasel) and Miami Art Week (@miamiartweek). We had a blast working with fellow artists and friends to bring Benito Esquenazi’s (@atelier_benito) artistic vision to life.

It was a narrative about coming together, being torn apart, and finding each other again. The entire process was smooth, cathartic, introspective, and kooky in the best possible way.

The live sound design and costumes were two of the most intricate elements of the production!

How so? We tucked a Bluetooth speaker into the arm cuff of each performer so that sound emanated from their movements, and the costumes allowed us to play with the shape and geometry of each performer’s body. They were able to create new endpoints and literally morph into new shapes.

A big thank you to the amazing performers Aeon De La Cruz (@flatearthgraphics), Kayla Castellon, Patricia Suarez, and Lize-Lotte Pitlo (@_lotte______); composer and sound alchemist 🎶🔮⚗️Juraj Kojš (@juraj.kojs); and innovative costume designer Olga Saretsky (@kikimorastudioart).

We’d like to extend a special thank you to visual artist Benito Esquenazi for trusting us with his world of joy seekers. Today is the last day of Art Week 2023 / Art Basel Miami Beach 2023.

I am honored to of had my work selected for the facade of the magical “Aqua Art Miami 2023” art fair. Which consistently is wonderful and a thought provoking experience.

I love these shows. I see a lot of art and one aspect of the entire experience is that it gets all people out to see art. Not just collectors. Seeing a cross section of all types of people filling the halls of an art exhibition or museum charges me with excitement.

It makes me feel like we are all exploring and learning. It brings me a sense of hope and aspiration for a better version of ourselves.

Seeing art is a high form of being. We experience a world where the artist can say anything without government censorship. Where we all have an opportunity to respond to the work or not.

But when I see something that moves me I know. It draws me closer and by then, am enchanted and submit to my instinct. As the work of art reveals itself to me. In that moment, I may find myself looking in the mirror, experience my past, knowing the future or just being in dialogue with a part of me I cannot put into words.

When I see art I realize how much I do not know. Most artists work I see during art fairs I am seeing for the first time. I like when I experience art without looking at labels. Doing so makes me follow my souls to uncharted territories of exploration.

It is a humbling and loving experience.

Today is the last day of Art Week 2023 / Art Basel Miami Beach 2023.

I am honored to of had my work selected for the facade of the magical “Aqua Art Miami 2023” art fair. Which consistently is wonderful and a thought provoking experience.

Thank you @artfairsmiami for providing me this opportunity to be a part of the collective art loving experience that represents art week Miami.

From Odyssey to Art: A Homecoming Mural by a Local Artist.

Cuban \ American artist Benito Esquenazi, a Miami Beach native returns home after four decades in New York to paint the facade of the historic Aqua Hotel during Art Week Miami 2023.

The mural is based on drawings created during Esquenazi's “long duration” public art performance titled the "Lincoln Road 500".

Esquenazi’s "Lincoln Road 500" tour-de-force performance comes to life again breaking-out onto the walls of the historic façade of the Aqua Art Miami 2023 Art Fair.

Through this project the artist seeks to share that what connects us is stronger than our differences.
